Olivet Theological Seminary Oceania Participates in Professional Development Day on Enhancing Assessment in the Age of AI

On October 21, 2024, faculty members from Olivet Theological Seminary Oceania took part in a Learning and Teaching Professional Development Seminar on “Assessment in the Age of Artificial Intelligence,” organized by the Sydney College of Divinity (SCD). As Generative AI becomes increasingly accessible, its influence on higher education is expanding, making this a timely topic addressed by the Department of Education.

The seminar focused on evaluating current assessment practices to navigate the risks and opportunities presented by Generative AI. A central theme was the need to strengthen the “human factor” in education. One key proposal was the revision of Bloom’s taxonomy to better incorporate meaningful learning objectives that emphasize critical thinking and creativity. Faculty participants were also tasked with reviewing and refining assessment items for a unit they are teaching in 2024, with an emphasis on promoting human-centered learning.

The seminar concluded with discussions on the effectiveness of these revised assessment strategies. OTS Oceania faculty expressed gratitude for this opportunity to address the evolving role of AI in education and are committed to exploring further ways to integrate AI into teaching and learning while fostering academic integrity among students.
